A guide to what happens when your labor is scheduled to be induced
Overview
If Dr. Raed Sayed Ahmed has scheduled you for induction, this guide explains what generally happens, from arrival through the start of labor. The clinical team will confirm your specific appointment time when it is scheduled.
When you arrive
You'll be received by one of the doctors supervising the delivery room, who will prepare you and begin the induction process.
Steps of induction
- Preparing the cervix: In most cases, a vaginal gel medication is used first. It helps the cervix soften and respond more easily to labor.
- Breaking the water and starting labor: Once the cervix opens to about 3 cm, the water around the baby may be broken and labor started intravenously (via oxytocin). This helps regulate your contractions.
Pain relief
You can receive an epidural when needed. Dr. Raed Sayed Ahmed will coordinate this with the medical team.
Dr. Raed's involvement
Dr. Raed Sayed Ahmed will be kept informed at every step of the process, and will be present in the delivery room the following morning.
If labor starts before your appointment
If you experience regular, painful contractions every five minutes before your scheduled appointment, please go directly to the delivery room.
